Google provides both basic and advanced image searching for over 1 billion images. Google's Advanced Image Search searching allows you to limit results based on usage rights, by size and quite a bit more - as does the Search Tools button.

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)

Provides for searching across a massive number of digital collections located in libraries, archives and museums throughout the United States.  Includes georeferences and timelines.

Europeana 

30 Million items from a range of Europe's galleries, archives, libraries and museums.

Flickr Commons

Flickr provides a search specifically designed to locate works that are offered under the Creative Commons license.

Search.creativecommons.org offers convenient access to search services provided by other independent organizations. Note that selecting different search options within the result list—particularly Image search for Google and Yahoo—may lead to the inclusion of results which are not Creative Commons licensed.

American Memory - Library of Congress

Contains over 5 million images and other archived materials relating to American culture and history. Guidelines for citing and reproducing images are also included.

Wikimedia Commons

Associated with the Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons searches the images available in the online Wikipedia encyclopedia. Click on an image to view copyright restrictions.

U.S. Geological Survey Photographic LibraryThe U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Central Regional Library maintains a collection of over 400,000 photographs taken during geologic studies of the United States and its territories from 1868 to the present.These images provide a visual history of the discovery, development, and sciences of the United States and its Geological Survey. Some photographs have been used in USGS publications, but most have never been published.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Image Library is a searchable collection of selected images, historical artifacts, audio clips, publications, and video and that are in the public domain.

Bioscience Imagebank This consists of freely available images contributed by academics, researchers, Learned Societies, industry and individuals with rights cleared for educational purposes.

A to Z MapsThis is also the worlds largest subscription-based database of proprietary, royalty-free world, continent, country, and state maps. Included in the 145,000+ maps are: political maps, physical maps, outline maps, population maps, precipitation maps, climate maps, and other thematic maps. GIS data for states, countries, and global levels are also available in shapefile, e00, and mdb formats.
